This piece of insanity started with the chord progression and vocal of the main chorus. I’d been to see Knower live, and was blown away by their fresh take on fusion. But I got stuck. I tried so many beats and other sections that didn’t work. I even enlisted the legendary finger-drummer Spinscott to lay down amens to get inspiration for the verse sections. But after a week of chopping up his various takes, I got nowhere.
The bin was calling me. Then, Felipe Urbandawn came to mind - he’s a fellow fusion head like me, so I sent him the stems of what I had, and thank God, he got it - he understood what I was going on about with this track. What’s more, he laid down the sickest intro, vocal hooks, ARPs, and guitar work in the middle, as well as a killer drop. All I needed now was the chorus to be sung, and of course, I called up Vonné, who smashed it totally despite the timing being stupidly tricky.
The outro is a little Steely Dan homage - it felt like it needed that. And check for the Hippy Shit making a reappearance!
This is a tune with many twists and turns, and it somehow happens to be Drum & Bass still. This world is one that by all rights shouldn’t really exist at all, but it’s still a million times better than the predictable vanilla-flavoured-glittery-planet populated by unicorn-believing-people frolicking in the quagmire of their own self-deception. Or something.
